Abstract

After the effect of N-(4-methoxy-2-nitrophenyl)-β-alanine sodium salt on the seed yield and the quality of oilseed rape variety Land Mark had been investigated in field conditions (2007–2009), it was found that this compound increased the average three-year seed yield and enhanced the nutrient quality of the seeds by decreasing their levels of glucosinolates and erucic acid. The increase in oilseed rape yied, caused by the N- (4-methoxy-2-nitrophenyl)- β-alanine sodium salt, was of a similar magnitude (~10%) as the increase caused in analogous studies by the plant hormone inhibitors. The study confirmed N- (4-methoxy-2-nitrophenyl)-β-alanine sodium salt as an effective oilseed rape growth regulator which could be used on industrial scale. The plant-growth regulating effect of this compound can be linked to its osmolytic characteristics.
