Abstract

The behaviour of silicate dispersion paint coatings and changes of their mechanical and physical performance depending on the content of key components and hydrophobic additives in the paint formulations were determined. A 2 % addition of hydrophobic additives such as aminosiloxan, aminosilan or silicon resin emulsions were found to improve significantly the hydrophobic properties of silicate dispersion paint coatings. Also, treatment of a dry coating surface with a liquid repellent increased the hydrophobic properties of coatings. The abrasion resistance of silicate dispersion coatings to abrasion increases with increasing the content of liquid glass, and their resistance to wet scrub increased with the content of polymer dispersions. However, the content of polymer dispersion more than 7 % in the formulation significantly decreased the water vapour permeability of coatings. The content of liquid glass had no significant effect on this feature.

On the basis of the results, there were made special silicate dispersion paints having one pronounced feature such as high water resistance, high mechanical resistance, or good cleanability, especially good water vapour permeability or cost-effectiveness. Also, results of testing the physical and mechanical properties of industrially produced special silicate dispersion paint coatings are presented.
